AMBC Victoria Newsletter - May 2021

Dear AMBC Victoria Members and Friends,

I hope that all is well with everybody as we start to feel the winter chill. In this edition of our newsletter, we welcome a number of new members to our business council and we welcome one new Life Member to AMBC Victoria. The Council has conducted a number of events since the beginning of the year and we are planning a number of events in the coming months. Membership renewal is due on 1 July and open now, the Council is counting on you for your on-going support.

New Members

AMBC Victoria is pleased to welcome our most recent new members: Armen Grigorian (Property Start), Trevor Du (Occasio) and Gilbert Chai (Hunt & Hunt Lawyers).

Armen Grigorian, Director
Property Start

PropertyStart provides virtual reality solutions to house builders, renovators, and property developers, to allow their customers to visualise their soon to be constructed house designs as if they were there in person. In essence, the builder can allow the customer to walk through their house before it's even built.

Any detail of the house that home buyers are not comfortable with can be addressed and resolved now before construction begins which will result in minimising the likelihood of design changes during construction time. Additionally, our technology makes selling off-the-plan projects easier, since the potential buyers can see what the finished product is going to look like.

We also produce Hi-Res videos of the soon to be constructed property which can be uploaded on the Real Estate Agents website.

Trevor Du, Investment Analyst

Trevor is an Investment Analyst at Occasio in the Real Estate Investments team. His primary responsibilities comprise due diligence, financial modelling and analysis, transaction execution and research. Outside of work, Trevor is a Mentor to property students at the University of Melbourne and sits on the committee of two not-for-profits, being Ignite (an alumni network and research house affiliated with the University of Melbourne) and the Asia Pacific Emerging Leaders Association.

Occasio is a dynamic boutique investment business, focused on property and property related investments. We are a nimble organisation focused on leveraging intellectual property into creative and innovative solutions for development partners, whilst delivering superior risk adjusted returns to investors. The team has deep and complimentary experience in property financing, project delivery and funds management, and is exceptionally placed to succeed within the current property market.

Gilbert Chai, Special Counsel
Peguambela & Peguamcara
Head of Malaysia Practice
Hunt & Hunt Lawyers

Gilbert heads Hunt & Hunt's Malaysia Practice group, focussing on assisting clients seeking to invest and conduct business in Australia and Malaysia. Prior to returning to Australia in 2019, Gilbert was Managing Partner of a Malaysian firm based in Kuala Lumpur.

Colin Abbott - Life Member

In addition to V.T. Lingam (deceased), Mike Anderson and Trevor Haines, we welcome Colin Abbott as a Life Member of AMBC Victoria.  Circa 2000, Colin Abbott joined the Australia Malaysia Business Council Victoria to prospect for new business for his family’s business Felton Grimwade & Bosisto’s Pty Ltd. Colin had recently taken on the role of export manager and wished to introduce the company’s product range of healthcare products, initially to Sabah and then expand distribution throughout Malaysia and Singapore. Success was had through Sime Darby who was instrumental in marketing the company’s product range.

In 2004, Colin established his own business consultancy focusing on South East Asia and then re-joined the family business in 2008 to assist the newly appointed Managing Director who had a Malaysian background.

Throughout this time, Colin was and still is an avid photographer. In 2015, Colin joined the AMBC Victoria/Australia Asia Association cultural and business visit to Singapore and Sabah and more recently, he has had a book published highlighting his extraordinary skills as a photographer.

Throughout his time with AMBC Victoria, Colin has supported the Council through his participation in our events and through supplying his photographic books as a ‘thank you’ gift to guest speakers who have presented at AMBC events. Colin is always willing to contribute and has supported all the AMBC Victoria initiatives and together with his wife Heather, will continue to support and be part of the business council that has assisted him with his business and photographic endeavours.

AMBC Victoria Events

The month of March was very busy for AMBC Victoria: we launched our 2021 year at Tian38 restaurant with over 35 members and guests in attendance; we heard from Mr Leigh Howard, Deputy Commissioner for Victoria based in Kuala Lumpur who outlined the current economic and business conditions in Malaysia; we had a general networking event at Temple Brewery thanks to our board member Ken Ong OAM who is a director of the brewery and a Speed Networking event that linked members from AMBC NSW-ACT, MABC and AMBC Victoria.

Coming up we have a number of events being planned including another Speed Networking event in early June with our colleagues from MABC and AMBC NSW-ACT; a property development briefing within the City of Monash and a workshop on the essentials of franchising. Dates for these events are to be confirmed.

In August, we will be holding our Annual General Meeting followed by a general networking event and in September, we will be holding our annual Malaysia Day Dinner.  The Malaysia Day Dinner was to be held at the Bayview Eden Hotel but his has had to change as the hotel has been commissioned by the Victorian government for non-quarantine business which means they cannot hold events during this time.
